Hey friends... Bob Fontaine here... I have finally listened to some of my great doctors and nurses and will share some of my on going experience with cancer along the way.
It's gotten somewhat humorous dealing with my specialists at time..(not as in my broken left humerus and cancer in left). New Doctors give me medical forms to talk about medical history, and there's like 3 lines to use. Pain specialist gives a cartoon person for me to mark where the pain is at.... 3 lines wont do it, so I give them this, and they VERY much appreciate it.
Cancer effects so many families, and many don't like to discuss their journey. Its a very difficult time in ones mind and life.
The other side of the coin is many that are close to you tend to avoid you or the subject, because they don't know what to say. other times I ha my I have been sent heart warming messages from people who I didn't think cared at all.
I write this during an especially trying time in my life... Tomorrow I have a rush appointment with dermatology oncologist, as the melanoma that almost killed me in 2012-2013+ appears to be making a possible comeback on my left arm.
I'll have a half dozen various tests this month in anticipation of seeing my 3 cancer oncologists., melanoma, prostate, colon. I do not know what I did to deserve 5th cancer of the the 3rd type. But I convinced myself years ago that I can handle anything. And I can. (As I later update, the positive colon colon cancer notice was wrong, as colonoscopy would show).
Mid month I have blood and scans, for the 3rd prostate cancer, this in my left humerus. I have 1 good psa test in a row.. but I quit chemo several months ago as that was killing me.
Hopefully at that point it will be Bob 1, melanoma 0.
Then i'll see the medical oncologist and get results. Ill get them before him, and there's one thing I will go direct PSA. If there is ANY detectable psa, with 3rd metastatic prostate cancer, it's over.
Have to inform this cancer doc that I have the new positive colon cancer result.
Then 3 weeks into August I will enjoy the lovely colonoscopy, after a positive finding.
Then I will go to my wonderful shrink so we can figure it all out (ya).
So I need to go 3 for 3 this August.
That is too many tests, too many Drs, and too many results with associated stress.
So I guess this is my new cancer type blog, that will have to include my personal life.
I have some amazing doctors and nurses to thank all over NE and beyond.
Including stories of the practical complications that this absurd Disease puts people through. Driving from Cape Cod to NYC in a blizzard, to get the $150,000+- dose of ippilumumab (Yervoy), the miracle drug that saved my life in a clinical cancer trial.
Or my 20 year old roommate at MSK that had lost his bowel, and cancer growing fast, his life ruined, in disgusting pain. Me badly in tears speaking with him behind his security curtain.
So, see you all next time, think its going to be a tough week to survive around here. Bob F.
